Nature and Art

"The glass looks as if it comes from nature"
Dale Chihuly
The Nature of Glass
an exhibition of hand blown glass by artist
Dale Chihuly
until May 31, 2009
FLOAT BOAT my favorite.. wouldn't it be nice to have
a hand full of these in my own garden!
*ENLARGE TO VIEW ARTWORK CLOSER!
The Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix..
acres of outdoor exhibits of succulent plants including
rare threatened and endangered plant species.
Unique works of hand blown glass artfully positioned within
a desert garden environment is now the main attraction.
"I am involved in glass and the light that passes through it
..the phenomenon of light being transmitted
through colored glass."
Dale Chihuly

"Scorpion Tails and Bamboo"
I personally think this looks like shooting flames.
Hot hot hot in the desert sun! Not only the art
but me as well!
Barrel cactus. Prickly pear. tall Organ Pipe cactus
Chihuly continues to revolutionize the art of
hand blown glass.. one art historian calls his work
"liquid light"
A perfect example when viewed up close..
see the flower form curly glass back right of photo

Not only was the expression of colored glass exhibit
exciting but the many desert plants from
around the world were extremely interesting to explore
and discover in their natural setting!
I learned the unique characteristics of desert plants and to
identify the numerous cacti that
I see while in and around the desert.
I enjoyed the beauty and tranquility of the Desert
Wildflower Trail, the Hummingbird and Herb gardens
in full bloom!
I chased butterflies bees and hummingbirds
trying to get a photo.. but no luck.. this time!!

"The function of art is to free the spirit of man and to
invigorate and enlarge his vision"
Katherine Dreier
~
I hope you enjoyed Chihuly's exhibition
"The Nature of Glass"
When walking about the Desert Botanical Garden you see
distant mountains and up-close views of surrounding desert.
When toured after dark there are night blooming flowers
with dramatically lit cacti..
I've not been there after dark but it's
certainly worth another visit!
Everyday I'm here is an adventure with
blue skies and sunshine!
I'm sending some your way have a wonderful weekend!

That's absolutly wonderful !
So poetic, light, colored in an environment that enhances their beauty. What a nice idea to exhibit them in such a parc.
Is it a temporary exhibit and they change the Artist from time to time ?

I have seen them displayed on an old spring mattress and lit from underneath and then hanging over that, and it was beautiful, but this totally tops the cake!

Thanks for the sunshine--it arrived here yesterday:)

Beautiful photos, Anna--isn't this exhibit amazing? I saw this back in December and was so enthralled. What I loved is that the glasswork seems to grow out of the landscape, mirroring the shapes of the plants beside it. Was this the surprise you meant in your reply to me earlier? I do intend to see it again when we go back in a couple of weeks--in fact, I don't remember seeing the second boat you have pictured here. But then, there was so much to see, I'm not surprised I missed something:)

Dear Anna,
Chihuly's work is outstanding. Your photographs are lovely. I feel as if I am standing right next to you!
I was so pleased to see an exhibit of his work when I was in a botancical garden here in Missouri last summer.
Looks as if you are having lots of fun!
I am off to the Pacific Northwest next week. I will celebrate the first day of Spring with my daughter.
Happy Spring,

Dear Anna, it's been some weeks since I last visited your blog, but I hope things will slow down now a little bit and I will have more time for this.
I see that you and Glenn and the cats are enjoying your trip! Could you please send some spring to Europe!?
Reading about you trying to take a picture of hummingbirds etc. reminds me of our visit to Kloster Eberbach last september! :)
Have a good time in Arizona,

I love Chihuly glass (he hails from Seattle - so there is lots around here! From the airport to the galleries). But I haven't seen any outdoor installations that look quite like that before! He is pretty spectacular.

Thanks for visiting my blog. I haven't been to the Desert Botanical Gardens in many years. I didn't even know they had these beautiful glass art pieces there. I saw some of this kind of art in Sedona. It is so pretty. I'm glad you're enjoying our desert and sunshine. You have so many gorgeous photos on your blog.
